Kawana Waters State College and the Suncoast Chess Club jointly hosted the Chess Day of Excellence at Kawana Waters State College on Friday 1stDecember.
90 dedicated and eager students from Kawana Waters State College, Brightwater State School, Buddina State School, Chancellor State College, Caloundra State High School and Mountain Creek State High School attended.
The day started with expert coaching sessions covering common chess tactics, blunders, traps, popular openings and important endgame concepts. The coaching was provided by Suncoast Chess Club coaches Rebecca, Wendy, Tulia & Jordan.
Once players gained some valuable tips it was time to put these strategies into practice in a tournament. Our tournament director, Rebecca, oversaw the competition with players competing in two separate tournaments each with 7 rounds to determine the Junior and Secondary champions.
Jarrod Bleijie, the State Member for Kawana, sponsored the trophy and medals. These were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the following age groups.
U7 - 1st Banks McDermott, 2ndJacob Roebuck, 3rd Ty Pickering
U9 - 1st Noah Lettieri, 2nd Joshua Purcell, 3rd Billy Gersbach
U11 - 1st Teodor Bulatlko, 2nd Jude Summerfeldt, 3rd Khoi Le

U13 - 1st Nathan Lubke, 2nd Karen Hooshmandi , 3rd Archie Brown
U15 – 1st Lacey LaRoche, 2nd Ethan True, 3rd Nathan Prichard

Kawana Waters State College and the Suncoast Chess Club jointly hosted the Chess Day of Excellence at Kawana Waters State College on Friday 2nd December. This is the 5th Day of Excellence hosted by the College. Suncoast Chess Club member, Wendy Coghill, started the Day of Excellence back in 2016.
95 dedicated and eager students from Kawana Waters State College, Brightwater State School, Buddina State School, Chancellor State College and Mountain Creek State School attended.
The day started with an expert coaching sessions covering common chess tactics, blunders, traps, popular openings and important endgame concepts, under the guidance of our coaches Nick, Jordan, Aidan, & Tony. They were also assisted on the day by Joshua and Logan from Kawana Waters State College who also helped with coaching and arbitering the tournament.
Once players gained some valuable tips it was time to put these strategies into practice in a tournament. Our Director of Play, Rebecca, oversaw the competition with the help of Tulia and Tony on the computer. The players competed in a 6 round Swiss tournament.
