Dear Suncoast Chess Club Members and Enthusiasts,
We hope this message finds you in good spirits and eager anticipation for the exciting chess events lined up for 2024. As we embark on a new chapter, we would like to share a significant update regarding our clubhouse tournaments.
📅 EFFECTIVE 2024: ALL CLUBHOUSE TOURNAMENTS WILL BE CAQ RATED
The Chess Association of Queensland (CAQ) has introduced a new regulation requiring all participants in affiliated club house tournaments to be active members of the CAQ for ratings purposes. In line with this, the Suncoast Chess Club has decided to align with this directive for all our scheduled clubhouse tournaments held on Tuesday evenings throughout 2024.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Powell, a beloved figure in the chess community and a cherished friend to many.
Bill departed from this world peacefully at his home on January 15, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of passion, leadership, and a deep love for the game of chess. Born in 1941, Bill dedicated a significant part of his life to the Suncoast Chess Club, where he served with distinction as both president and vice president.
His impact on the chess community extended beyond the club, as he also held the esteemed position of president of CAQ (Chess Association of the Queensland).
Bill's commitment to the promotion and growth of chess was evident in his tireless efforts. He organized the Suncoast Chess Club's first open tournament, a milestone event that brought enthusiasts together and elevated the stature of the club. His dedication extended to fostering the next generation of chess players, as he took a lead role in organizing interschool tournaments, inspiring young minds to engage in the intellectual challenges that chess presents. Beyond his organizational contributions, Bill was a mentor who believed in the ethos that chess offered not only victories and draws but valuable lessons to be learned.
His mantra, "Win, Draw, and Learn," encapsulated his philosophy that every game, regardless of the outcome, contributed to personal growth and understanding. Bill's impact reached far beyond the chessboard.
His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering encouragement endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a chess community forever changed by his passion, leadership, and commitment. A Funeral Service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on January 22, 2024, at 13:30. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be available for viewing online through "Gregson & Weight" Funeral Streaming process.
This provides an opportunity for friends and well-wishers, whether near or far, to join in commemorating a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the Suncoast Chess Club kindly requests donations be made in Bill's memory to his beloved chess-related charity or educational program, continuing his legacy of nurturing the love for chess in future generations.
Please donate to Suncoast Chess Club Incorporated to continue his legacy to build his love for Chess. William (Bill) Powell will be dearly missed, and his memory will forever reside in the hearts of those who had the privilege of sharing in his love for the game and life itself.
Best Regards,
Christopher Koloszar, Suncoast Chess Club President
