Dear Players and Friends of the Suncoast Chess Community,

You are warmly invited to compete in the Mary Cairncross Blitz Chess Tournament. Join us for an afternoon of sharp tactics, fast time controls, and celebrate one of Queensland’s most iconic natural locations.

The tournament takes its name from Mary Thynne (née Cairncross), born in 1848, a passionate early environmental advocate in Queensland. She campaigned to protect native forests and later married Andrew Joseph Thynne, who purchased the Maleny land in 1902. In 1941, her daughters Elizabeth, Mabel, and Mary Thynne gifted 100 acres of rainforest to the Landsborough Shire Council in her honour, establishing what is now the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Their deed of trust ensured the rainforest would be preserved in perpetuity for conservation and public enjoyment. 

Today, the reserve stands as one of the Sunshine Coast’s most treasured ecological sanctuaries — a legacy of foresight, stewardship, and community spirit.

  📜 Spring Family Day Chess Event📜

Register Online by midnight Saturday July 11th. Check in on the day at the venue by no later than 12:30pm. Tournament starts at 1:00pm sharp. Strictly No late Comers!

Format: This is an open event for adult and junior players of all ages and abilities. This is a family-friendly tournament with 7 Rounds with an allocated time of 15 minutes on a digital chess clock or 25 minutes when adjudicated. This tournament is QJ Rated.

Prizes/Rating Groups: Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each division, Best Junior Girl and the President’s Encouragement Award. The number of prize groups will depend on the number of entries received.

 James Nash (Gold Rush) Blitz 

 Dear players, friends, and members of the Suncoast Chess community,

You are warmly invited to compete in the James Nash (Gold Rush) Blitz, a fast‑paced tournament honouring one of the most pivotal figures in Sunshine Coast and Queensland history: James Nash, the man whose discovery of gold in 1867 transformed an entire colony.

James Nash (1834–1913) was a quiet, solitary prospector whose perseverance changed Queensland forever. Born in Wiltshire, England, he migrated to Australia at 23 and spent years walking vast distances between goldfields in search of opportunity. 

In August 1867, while travelling with little more than a pick, a pan, and his dog, Nash discovered gold near the Mary River at Gympie. His early finds—33 grams in a day and a half, then 2.1 kilograms in six days—were enough to confirm a major field. 

On 16 October 1867, Nash reported his discovery to the Queensland government, sparking “one of the wildest rushes in Queensland history.”

HALLOWEEN KNIGHTS 

Hear ye, brave souls of the chequered realm— the Halloween Knights Chess Tournament approacheth, cloaked in mystery and mild inconvenience.

On the eve after All Hallows’ Night—1st November—gather ye at the board where knights rattle their armour, bishops mutter suspicious incantations, and pawns wander about like confused trick‑or‑treaters seeking purpose.

For on this day, the spirits of fallen chess pieces rise again, demanding rematches they never received. Let thy moves be bold, thy courage steady, and thy snacks preferably pumpkin‑themed.

You are hereby summoned to the Snowman Skewer Rapid Chess Tournament, where minds shall clash like icy winds and pieces shall march with cold‑hearted precision. Let your pawns crunch across the frosted board, let your bishops carve paths like sleet through the night, and let your knights leap as though bounding over drifts of winter snow.

Gather your courage, sharpen your wits, and prepare to melt the competition.

 Join us for a tournament of merriment, mischief, and masterful manoeuvres. May your strategy be sharp, your resolve unthawed, and your opponents thoroughly skewered.
